Kinesiotaping Your Baby’s Umbilical Hernia Will Help Them Poop!

I am presenting this innovative approach at the National Association of Neonatal Therapists Conference in Indianapolis in just a couple of days! So I thought I would share it with you all.

Caring for a baby who has an umbilical hernia can be worrisome for any parent. Umbilical hernias are quite common in infants and occur when a small portion of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall through the belly button (the fascia around that is called the umbilical ring).

Though most umbilical hernias are harmless and can resolve on their own, they can frequently lead to discomfort with digestion or difficulty with bowel movements. You might see your baby bearing down and struggling to poop… I know when I worked in the NICU, this was a common problem- babies who had trouble breathing and pooping!

So I took this protocol I found… and changed the tape, took out the parts that didn’t sit right with me (100% of babies had redness with the tape in this study- and I don’t let that happen with my babies for example) to create this approach to taping hernias that has been working beautifully for my patients!

What is Kinesiotaping?

Kinesiotaping involves applying special elastic tape to the skin. First, I’ll say that I don’t have a brand I like- Kinesiotape is one, KT Tape is another, Rock tape is great… the biggest thing I recommend is using a Sensitive Skin Tape.

These elastic therapeutic tape is designed to support muscles and joints while still allowing for movement. In the case of babies with umbilical hernias, kinesiotaping can provide gentle support to the abdominal area, potentially promoting better bowel function while reducing discomfort.

How Kinesiotaping Can Help Your Baby

  1. Promotes Healthy Circulation: Kinesiotape works by lifting the skin slightly, which can improve circulation in the area. Improved circulation promotes healing and can also assist in the digestive process, helping your baby feel more comfortable when they need to poop.

  2. Reduces Discomfort: By providing gentle compression and support, kinesiotaping can ease any discomfort your baby may feel from the hernia. A more comfortable baby may be less fussy and more relaxed, which can help them with bowel movements.

  3. Provides Stability: Kinesiotape can help stabilize the abdominal wall around the hernia. This support may prevent pain during movements and assist in reducing the bulge, making bowel movements a little easier for your baby.

How to Kinesiotape Your Baby’s Umbilical Hernia

Before you begin taping, it's essential to consult your pediatrician or a healthcare professional for advice tailored to your baby’s situation. If you receive clearance, here’s a simple technique to get started:

  1. Materials Needed:

    • Kinesiology tape (choose a hypoallergenic type for babies).

    • Scissors.

    • Another human.

  2. Measure and Cut the Tape:

    • Cut a piece of tape that is small and round the edges (this is your test strip)

    • Cut a piece of tape approximately 4 inches long. Round the edges.

  3. Application: (Do this with a trained professional the first time)

    • “Reduce” the hernia… make sure it can go all the way in.

    • Fold the skin on either side over the hernia… (like an empanada)

    • Have someone else place the tape over the skin and use your finger to make sure it sticks!

  4. Check Comfort:

    • Ensure the tape adheres well and doesn't restrict your baby's movement. It should provide support without causing any pain or discomfort.

When to Seek Further Assistance

It’s not enough to just slap a piece of tape over their belly button. Ask for help from someone who knows how to do this!!

I’m always happy to hope on a consult call with you.

While kinesiotaping can provide relief, it's important to monitor your baby’s umbilical hernia closely. If you notice increased pain, or changes in bowel habits, reach out to your pediatrician. In some cases, a surgical intervention may be necessary.

Conclusion

Kinesiotaping your baby’s umbilical hernia may help alleviate discomfort and promote better bowel function, making pooping a little less stressful for both you and your little one.

Always consult a healthcare professional before trying new methods for managing your baby’s health to ensure safety and efficacy for YOUR baby.

By embracing innovative approaches like kinesiotaping, you can provide your baby with the support they need during their early months.

Here’s to happier tummies and easier poops!

Love,

Emily
