What does it mean to make a human?

In our postpartum support group this week, Danielle LaSusa, PhD - philosopher for hire and guide for mothers making sense of motherhood, joined our humble little group to guide the conversation.

Making a human is one of the most incredible things we do. It starts with the basics—cells coming together to kick off the creation of a new life. But it’s so much more than just biology. From the very beginning, it’s about nurturing potential, both inside and outside the womb.

When a baby is conceived, it’s not just a physical process; it’s emotional and spiritual too. The mother’s heartbeat, her emotions, and even the world around her begin to shape this tiny human long before they’re born. There’s an unspoken connection that forms, laying down the foundation for who this little person will become.

But it’s not just up to the parents. The community, the environment, and the culture the baby is born into play a huge role too. Every sound, every touch, every experience from the outside world influences this new life. In a way, a baby is a reflection of the world they’re born into—a world that, hopefully, is filled with love, safety, and endless possibilities.

Yet, with all this wonder comes an overwhelming responsibility. The weight of it can feel crushing at times, as if every decision, every action, could shape your child’s future in ways you can’t fully predict. It’s easy to feel like you’re always doing something wrong, no matter how hard you try. The pressure to be the perfect parent—to make the right choices, to never falter—can be intense. And the truth is, no one gets it right all the time. Parenting is filled with moments of doubt and second-guessing, where the stakes seem impossibly high.

And let’s be real: making a human is a huge responsibility. It’s not just about bringing them into the world but guiding them as they grow. Every word, every action from parents and caregivers helps shape who this little person will become. It’s a lifelong journey that starts before they even take their first breath.

At its core, making a human is an act of love. It’s about investing in the future, nurturing a new life, and recognizing the incredible potential every baby has. When we make a human, we’re contributing to the ongoing story of humanity, adding another unique voice to the chorus of life.
